Christmas Day was a relaxing, easy day of exploring for us. Belize has several islands along its coast, and most are accessible by water taxi. Less than half an hour away from Belize City is the island of Caye Caulker. Here's a map and description of the island.

One part of the island is a small village, the other part is made up of more secluded residences for the rich and private. We saw only one truck on the island. Foot, bike or golf-cart are the choices you have for getting around.

A few years ago a hurricane hit the area. One of the lasting effects from the storm was the island of Caye Caulker actually became two islands. A very shallow channel now splits the island and has become a beach hang-out for locals and tourists. And, the 'new' island has property for sale. All you have to do is pay for it, clear it and build it.

Caye Caulker is not as big as Ambergris Caye, another island further into the ocean. But we found the pace on Caye Caulker to be just about perfect.

Leave it to Shannon to make friends with the furry locals. This was Old Smiley and Charlie. Or at least, that's what we named them.

Below, a typical couple of streets of Caye Caulker.

An egret out fishing by Caye Caulker. In size and style, its kind of close to a heron, don't you think? Just a more fashionable white instead of the blue-grey of our parts.
